The role of a lead instructor is to deliver awareness level training
at the local level and at fixed training locations.
Prerequisites And Requirements Of The Lead Instructor
- Must be 21 years old
- Must be a fire service member for at least 5 years
- Must be certified at the Operations Level in all seven technical
rescue disciplines, and in good standing with the Indiana Department
of Homeland Security Division of Training
- Must be certified as an Instructor II/III, and in good standing
with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Training
- Must posses a valid Indiana Drivers license
Duties of a Lead Instructor
- They are able to oversee the administration of classes
- They are able to observe and evaluate students as they learn
- They are able to teach from a prepared lesson plan or teach from
their own lesson plans as long as they are an Instructor II/III
- They are able to teach solo
- They are able to proctor tests, as long as they are an Instructor
II/III
Process For Becoming A Lead Instructor
The
candidate must fill out an appropriate application and send it to the Course
Coordinator for review, and then, provided all qualifications are met, the
candidate will receive final approval from the IFCA Technical Rescue Section
Committee.
After
an Instructor becomes a Lead Instructor for this program, they must renew
their status every two years by resubmitting an application for review of
the Course Coordinator and Technical Rescue Section Committee.
Training Safety
- Safety is of the utmost importance and must always be the first
consideration.
- Instructors must set a good example by using proper safety equipment
and procedures and must remember that they are responsible for the safety
of every student.
- All instructors are authorized to take the necessary action to correct
unsafe conditions.
Record Keeping For Instructors
- Any training program that is paid for or is a part of the State
of Indiana Training Plan, the Instructor shall have all students fill
out an Instructor Evaluation form to be turned into the Course Coordinator
for review.
Instructor Code of Conduct
- Do everything possible to achieve excellence in professional conduct
and deliver the highest quality instruction in every class taught.
- Show respect for students in language and actions.
- Treat all people fairly, without regard to race, sex, religion,
age, disability, national origin or persons department
- Set aside conflicts between the students, others, and myself within
the context of carrying out my professional responsibilities.
- Provide a safe and professional learning environment for all students
- Strive to maintain continuous and positive communications between
students, instructors, and other fire department staff.
- Present myself in a professional manner, through attitude, dress,
and presentation.
Instructor Appearance Standards
- Classroom Appearance: It is each instructor’s responsibility to
use good judgment in selecting attire that projects a professional image
and that is appropriate for both climate differences and classroom activities.
The Course Coordinator has the authority to make a determination that
an instructor’s attire may be inappropriate.
Application Process Review

Complete and sign instructor application forms and forward to

The Course Coordinator will review the application and verify
requirements for approval to teach the required classes. |
| Step 3. |
Once the application is approved, the Course Coordinator will
notify the instructor that they have been placed on the list of
approved instructors. |
| Step 4. |
The Course Coordinator will use the list of approved instructors
to schedule the courses being offered with instructors that most
closely match the requirements and that are available to instruct
that given course. |
